I listen to a lot of fiction audiobooks, and it's not comparable at all (I know you're not making that comparison, I'm just noting it). The difference is the professionalism. Audiobooks (not shitty AI-narrated ones, obviously) are recorded by professional voice actors, they have the voice and intonation for the scene, and they make it work because that's what they do.I've never seen it done where it adds to the VN. Audiobooks work but for a VN and especially an AVN I think if anything it take me out of it. Plus extra cost that just isn't needed.
If an AVN hired good quality professionals, it could work (not everyone would like it, but it could work). It would have to be professionals plural as well, as you wouldn't be able to get away with one (or even two) narrators voicing every character - for an audiobook comparison, it would have to be like Graphic Audio, where every main character is voiced by a different actor. As suggested, that would just cost way too much.
However, one big thing that makes it impossible for the end user is that the player would never be able to choose their own name (or maybe would have a choice of say two or three options max). To work, every line would have to be voiced, otherwise it's nothing but a gimmick. That means every line that uses the MC's name (hence you wouldn't be able to choose your name) - and also every line the MC says, which will take a lot of people out of the immersion as it won't sound like them.
I don't have an issue with voiced games as I always play with the sound off anyway, so I don't hear them. Whenever I have turned it on out of curiosity though, it's always been rubbish.
